Onto The Next Chapter | Day Trip to Guatapé ● Medellín, Colombia

The View at the Top of the Rock (2017-08-13)

Before coming into this country, we read so many blogs, tips and articles online about "Things to do in Medellín" and going to Guatapé was one of them! I was super excited to go here because I have been seeing photos of Piedra Del Peñol (The Rock of Guatapé). It's a MUST SEE when you come here. There are a few ways you can get there: By yourself using a bus or driving OR you can join a group tour that will take you to the rock, but also give you a tour of Guatapé.

We decided to rent a motorbike and drive there yourselves to have the freedom of going home whenever we wanted to. In Medellín, there is a shop called Medellín Scooter Rentals. It was super easy to rent a bike/scooter. You will need to give them a copt of your drivers' license, passport and credit card. We got a scooter for $135.000 (for daily 24 hours use) - you will need to give a deposit of $200.00. Check out their website for more information. The guy was super cool and nice. He showed Tim the basics of how the scooter works. And off we went!

The ride there was 2 hours long. It was not fun riding the bike for 2 hours straight...but it was nice to have the freedom of doing whatever you want and coming back whenever you want. If you decide to drive there yourself, I recommend the bike, but take breaks - even if it's to grab a snack or food along the road. There are tons of restaurant and the views are amazing on the way there.

When we got to Piedra Del Peñol, it was $2.000 to park our bike and the entrance fee to climb the stairs was $18.000. It was very tiring but it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. It only took us about 20 minutes to get up there. As you can see from the photo above, the view is spectacular...you can spend hours up there just taking photos. We took a few photos and headed down from the small tower on top of the rock and hung out in a small outside cafe. We ordered the mango michelada.

After we visited El Peñol, we went to Guatapé to check out the town. It's a small town with beautiful colorful streets.

That concludes our day trip to Guatapé. It was such a beautiful day and I am glad we were able to go there for the amazing view.

Until next time...
